Ikat or Ikkat is the method of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dye on either the warp or weft fibres. The dye is applied prior to the threads are woven to create the final fabric pattern or design. The process of ikat weaving is fascinating A as each individual silk thread is dyed before the weaving process. The strands of silk are tied off and dip dyed in different dye baths, yielding multiple colors on a single strand of silk. Upon weaving, the design then becomes apparent to anyone watching as the weaver had the design in his or her head well beforehand. The image of this gorgeous Ikat is dramatic and quite 'modern' looking. One can imagine a contemporary artist could gain inspiration from exposure to this art form.
