Description

Woven on wooden looms, the Bessarabian kilims tend to have large floral patterns and bold color combinations. Post his travels to England, Peter the Great was enamored but the beautiful savonneri, aubusson and axminster rugs. He set up the Russian Imperial Tapestry factory to create such carpets for the Russian nobility. As demand grew, the production spread to villages, mostly in current Moldova and Romania. This region thereby came to be known for the Bessarabian rugs. This is a vintage piece and is unique for its geometric representation of people and animals.
