Isfahan was established as a centre for art and culture by the Safavid dynasty in the 17th century. It was very well known for its architecture and Persian rug making. The design aesthetics had inspirations from mosiac work to bookbinding to inlay. Many rugs displayed centralized medallion compositions filled with lush arabesque ornament produced with the greatest intricacy and precision.
