Samarkand is a popular town on the Silk Route in east Turkestan. This region was known for its oasis towns, which also were makers of exceptional vintage rugs. Gaining inspiration from the Silk Route, these Khotan Samarkand carpets had a unique design and were largely influenced by Chinese culture.

The culture and tradition of the Samarkand city were majorly influenced by the frequent visits of international travelers. With their narrow and long format, the rugs were designed with intricate but spacious designs. The color combinations were unique and very different from the typical Persian rug colors. This added to the appeal of these carpets.
