East Turkestan was known for its oasis towns, which also were makers of exceptional vintage rugs. Gaining inspiration from the Silk Route, these Khotan Samarkand carpets had a unique design and were largely influenced by the Chinese culture. With their narrow and long format, the rugs were designed with intricate but spacious designs. Made with the best quality fabric, usually wool, the rugs were embroidered using metal and silk threads. It also had large motifs in bright colors complemented perfectly with the darker background. Symbolism was key for the Samarkand rugs. Pomegrenates being the favorite amongst the tribes, signifying prosperity.
