We are the only company in the world to have developed the authentic Shahmina shawl. The Shahmina shawl has been introduced as an environmentally friendly alternative to the world-renowned Shahtoosh shawl that has been banned for trade by Wild life authorities the world over.
Shahtoosh shawls are considered to be the softest, lightest and warmest fabrics in the world and were made for the kings and Royalty in the 14th Century. Shah means Emperor and Toosh means shawl hence Shahtoosh shawls were ones made for the king. These shawls were derived out of Tibetan Antelopes known as Cheeru, which were found in high altitudes, as the animal cannot survive in the lower mountains. The hair of this animal is very fine (12-15 microns) as it is found in extremely cold weather where vegetation is very low and the animal survives on moss that grows on the mountains. These shawls are extremely warm and were also sometimes worn on the naked body and used as aphrodisiacs.
We have been working closely with the Wildlife Protection Society of India and the Wildlife Trust of India to develop an environmentally friendly alternative to this shawl.
The Shahmina is made from the first shearing (clipping) of the Baby Pashmina goat also known as The Virgin wool. This fibre is extremely fine when we compare it with a human hair strand which is around 75 microns (thinness of fibre). The thinner the fibre, the finer and softer is the resulting fabric. Baby Pashmina microns are approximately 14-16 microns.
This raw material is then handspun using centuries old techniques and is spun on a wooden wheel. This yarn is then spun finer and finer using different processes, starched and subsequently warped on a handloom and is then hand woven. This process roughly takes around a month for one shawl. We make these shawls in a vast variety of designs in checks and stripes as well as plain solid colours. We can also custom dye them in about a 1,000 colours and use AZO free dyes (non cancerous Swiss dyes). We also can dye them using vegetable dyes or natural dyes which are extracted out of plants, rocks, minerals, fruit etc.
We have a colour shade card of our own which has around 400 colours and these shawls can be dyed in solids and also in shaded (aumbrey) colours.
Apart from these we do sell other shawls, stoles and scarves. We manufacture shawls in 100% superfine Australian Merino wool. These are reproductions of Antique Jamewar shawls that were made using Paisley patterns mainly.
Apart from these we also manufacture Pashminas blended with silk and sometimes even fine wool. These can also be available in plain (solids) or with embellishments such as Swarovsky crystals, hand done silk embroideries, Japanese beads, Sequins, Mughal Zardozi hand embroideries, mirror work, suede and leather trimmings and tassles, fur trimmings, prints, tie and dyes, Jacquards, Capes, ponchos, baby blankets, mens scarves, cushions, blankets and bedcovers etc.
