The history of the world-renowned Jail Carpets dates back to the era of Mughal Emperor Akbar. During the 1520-30's, he brought some of the finest weavers of carpets from the most well known carpet workshops of Persia to teach carpet weaving to the inmates.

The Jail Carpets were made of the finest wool, velvets, silks and sometimes even Pashmina wool. The dyes used were natural dyes and vegetable dyes that were extracted out of plants, rocks, minerals, insects etc. Unlike chemical colours, these dyes lasted for hundreds of years. The themes & designs were unique and distinctive, quite different from the traditional Persian, Turkish and central Asian carpets and have fetched record prices at auctions the world over.
