Durries are flat weaves woven on handlooms by illiterate tribal nomads who move from place to place on horses and camels, leading nomadic lives of subsistence farming. These Durries are sometimes woven as pieces of dowry, for self-use and not for resale by the tribals using raw materials like wool from their own livestock, such as horses, camel, yaks, goats etc. They are generally geometrical in design The tribals though illiterate, themselves have an amazing sense of colours and aesthetics, as they have been involved in this art form for centuries. |
